Jivan is a research fellow at BIAD (Birmingham Institute of Art and Design) and has, among many other things, worked on jewellery based on 3D protein structures. This work, with Sandra Wilson of Dundee, was show in the 'Pulse: The stuff of life' exhibition The Jewellery shown in 'Pulse' was created with raw data supplied by Bernard de Bono of the MRC's Cambridge labs and a rapid prototyping machine. New Directions in Jewellery will be published by Black Dog Publishing and will cost £24.95. The launch will be held at the Pump House Gallery in London's Battersea Park.
Second network meeting a success
The second network meeting, held over 25/26 May as an open seminar, drew a good turnout and featured speakers from a wider range of backgrounds than the first. Topics ranged from self-organisation in paintings to developmental biology and all speakers generated plenty of discussion. Hopefully out of this will come some interesting new directions for the network to explore.
The meeting was attended by both existing network members and people interested in it's activities. We hope to see the network expanding as plenty of participants expressed their interest in joining. A list of participants can be found here, with the meeting agenda here.
Evolutionary computation on Australian radio
In January the Australian Broadcasting Corporation aired an interview with network member Peter Bently on the Radio National Science show. The tagline was 'Evolving Robots', and in it Peter talks about a small robot evolved to avoid obstacles although the conversation quickly turns to his work on evolving Formula One cars.
The transcript is available here
Second network meeting 26th-27th May 2005
The second cluster meeting will be held on the 26th and 27th of May 2005, hosted once again at the University of Birmingham. The aim of the seminar is to bring together practitioners from more disciplines. We intend to have speakers from the fields of biology, art, industrial design and computer science to stimulate discussion and generate some new ideas. Most of the computer scientists present at the first meeting wanted to know more about the design process, so this is an opportunity to involve some non-computer science designers in the network's activities.
There is a draft agenda here.
Prof Julian Vincent interview in 'The Engineer'
The Engineer, a magazine aimed at the UK engineering technology community, has an interview with network member Prof Julian Vincent.
Prof Vincent talks about his work on breathable clothing inspired by pinecones (one of 8 projects representing UK science at Expo 05 The interview can be found here
Network coordinator post filled
The network coordinator post has been (unofficially) offered to Will Byrne who has accepted it.
Will brings both organisational, research and technical skills to the project, and is likely to the be main point of contact for network members. Will was present at the kick-off meeting, and so many of you have already met him. Welcome, Will!
First Meeting a Success
14 Network members attended the meeting on friday, 18th. We had a good introduction to each other's interests in the morning, and about the network in the afternoon. Now we have to follow it up and get a couple of seminars organized.
First Network Meeting on Friday
Despite the short notice, we have got a large number of members who said they'll come. With this meeting, the network should really kick off ! See Meeting 1: Startup Meeting?
Coordinator Post Interviews on Monday
We'll interview the candidates for the network coordinator on monday - so we should have someone in post soon !
Network Hub created
I have created the network hub for the network - a bit more editing of configuration values, a bit more style changes, then it should be OK to start with. But I'll have to add some content before I announce it.
